Popular hike that is worth the trek in New Jersey
It's often rated as one of the most beautiful hikes in NJ and it's about time we gave it a try.
After our summer trips, Marc went back to work and autumn is typically a time we adventure more locally and discover some of the beauty in our own backyard. Although it isn't autumn yet, 100% humidity today, we decided to kick-start our adventuring a little earlier. Alaska got us pumped to hike more, so let's start exploring.
Rt 94 N, Vernon, NJ
7.4 Miles out and back.
Stairway To Heaven
Easy to Moderate. The first half of the trek is flat on a boardwalk. The last 2 miles is the majority of elevation gain.
This is a very scenic trail that begins on a boardwalk through a meadow of wildflowers and greenery. You will later cross over a suspension bridge, walk deep into the woods, pass a cow pasture (watch your feet "peeyew") and up the rocky stairway of Wawayanda Mountain to overlook the Pochuk Valley. I imagine epic views when the foliage pops in the fall.
keep in mind:
It's a popular hike so don't expect it to be quiet if you aren't there super early in the morning. You will cross people casually walking their dog or running on the short trails. People picnicking at the top, or hard core hikers who've been on the trail for days, weeks, or months.
